GRAPHIC ANALYSIS
COVER ART ANALYSIS
The cover of any novel is a significant part of any published work, since its sole purpose is to provide a metaphorical and artistic visual summary of the work’s themes, topics, characters, and settings as well as to market the book by appealing to a wide range of readers. Analyze the sample covers for The Outsiders, paying close attention to image, design, typography, and the relationship of these things to the themes, topics, characters, and settings. The titles of the books are also of significance to the entire novel as they evoke the work’s ideas, themes, or conflicts.
Examine the sample book covers for The Outsiders, paying close attention the themes, topics, and characters represented in their designs. Then, answer the following questions about the covers for this novel.
After looking at the different covers for the novel, you are to now create one which you best portrays the above elements while appealing to a wide audience of prospective readers.
You may complete this using Google Docs or another digital program that is pre-approved by me. You are designing the cover only but will need to include the following elements:
Examine the sample book covers for The Outsiders, paying close attention the themes, topics, and characters represented in their designs. Then, answer the following questions about the covers for this novel.
- What theme is being depicted by the cover? Why?
- What characters are the focus of the cover? Why?
- Examine the use of typography. What is unique about the type and the use of conventions? Explain.
- What topics may be explored in this book according to the reader’s predicts using the graphics? Why?
After looking at the different covers for the novel, you are to now create one which you best portrays the above elements while appealing to a wide audience of prospective readers.

- A catch phrase or important quote from the novel
- Graphics that depict theme, conflict, character, topic, and/or setting

BEFORE AND AFTER
ART ANALYSIS ACTIVITY
BEFORE:
Using the OPTIC strategy, analyze the following pieces of artwork for themes, motifs, symbols, and topics an introductory activity for the students to start making predictions related to the novel. Number the pieces of art and set up the activity as a gallery walk using classical or instrumental music from the Holocaust time period to assist in the setting of the tone and mood for the students. Pause the music every three to five minutes to indicate movement to the next station for the students.
Using their own paper, the students are to provide a title for the art as well as two themes, two motifs, two symbols, and two topics. The themes need to be complete statements, but the remaining components may be notes.
AFTER:
Return the original notes from the pre-reading analysis activity and set up the gallery walk with the same numbering. This time, use the notes from the pre-reading activity and now analyze the artwork for the connection to the novel. Be specific in making the connection from the artwork to the text and provide evidence from both to support your idea.
Choose one piece of artwork and compose a blog explaining its relationship to the novel. You may take a picture of the artwork or get it from the shared drive to post as a companion to the blog. Be sure to tag the author for the assignment as well as the artist if applicable.
OPTIC STRATEGY
O= OVERVIEW
Conduct a brief overview of the image looking at the piece as a whole.
P=PARTS
Look at the parts of the graphic alone.
Read any and all labels.
Note any elements or details that seems important.
Note any uniqueness with regard to shape and color.
T=TITLE, TEXT
Cover the title while students are working on the graphic.
Once they have completed the analysis, they are to entitle the graphic.
Read the title of the visual to be clear on the subject in the graphic.
I=INTERRELATIONSHIPS
Use the parts, colors, and shapes of the graphic as visual clues to create interrelationships within the graphic.
C=CONCLUSION
Draw a conclusion about the graphic as a whole.
Reanalyze the graphic by putting back together all the parts.
What does this visual mean?
Why was it inclined with the text?
Summarize the message of the visual.

Be sure to use the OPTIC strategy to take apart the advertisements below these instructions. In addition to identifying and analyzing for the aspects of the pneumonic device, be sure to identify the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) being used as well as the rheotical fallacies. Be ready to discuss the author's purpose in the use of the rhetoric, diction, images, and colors.
